Phil Smith our Technical Director is through to the final 5 in this year’s “Ones to Watch” – the 2011 PPMA award for young talent who have made a real impression on the Processing and Packaging industry.
Phil started with our company as an engineering apprentice and has worked his way up into the position of Technical Director, and has developed of a number of our key products helping us become the UK's largest supplier of converging and pack collation equipment.
The success of our equipment is due to Phil’s focus on the user of the equipment. Phil has a very simple philosophy that if the simplest line operator does not know how to work our equipment then it will not be suitable for a production line.
This has been a great philosophy as our equipment is rarely seen as the cause of the problem on a production line, as it is quickly corrected by line personnel before it becomes a problem.
Whilst developing our Converger range an opportunity was developed by Phil, to replace the Lazy Susie used on the end of a packing line with a simple, multi-format stacking system. These units have dramatically improved the performance of end of line packing operations and have reduced labour costs for our customers.
The equipment has been adopted by Tulip, Cranswick and many other production sites. For the first time the production Managers can control the speed of their lines, by not allowing packs to accumulate on the lazy Susie.
From the operator’s point of view, they now receive 25 stacks per minute 4 packs high rather than 100ppm! They also have a machine that they can also reset easily for different pack sizes and stack configurations.
This is certainly the newest machine seen on production lines, from a UK supplier, for many years.
